Artist’s Biography
During my childhood, I closely watched my mother who was a popular fine artist, who worked her oil and acrylic paintings. She was so capable of capturing any place or person and this inspired me to want to be like her. Her drawings transported me far away from the ordinary to the extraordinary world. I recall another love of artcame from reading the Life of Artists Collection: This was part of my mom’s library and each month, one book was sent to her focusing on the life of one famous artist. (We had the Monet , Manet, Turner, Cezanne, Picasso, and Degas as part of this collection.) I also read about the Walt Disney’s Company and the Disney Animation Studio artists. I wanted an early understanding of Art and kept reading articles in the American Artists magazines. From my pre-teens throughout adolescence, I practiced the skill of drawing with whatever interested me. I also studied painting in oils and watercolors when I could afford lessons. Throughout my K-12 public school years, I joined the Art Club and the Arlington Art Association. In 1972, I was accepted at the University of MA as a Fine Arts Major. I studied photography, art history, and drawing portraits with pastel. In 1977, I applied and was accepted into Mass College of Art on Huntington Ave in Boston, MA. I graduated with a BFA degree in 1981. After college I found no full-time work in the Fine Arts field.
For the next 20 years,. I worked mostly as a supervisor in the Air Force managing reservists working with Aircraft Schedules and Aircraft Maintenance. I retired from military service in 2003 and returned to college to earn a Teaching Certificate in WA. I worked another 14 years in Education earning a Masters of Curriculum and Instructional Design. I had limited opportunity to use my Art education but did teach an elective Visual Arts for the middle school students. I became the Art for Kids Coordinator a program that provides grants to public school teachers via the Northwest Watercolor Society and took classes online as well as with Ann Breckon and the Tacoma Open Arts Studio. I have become a member of the Arts Alliance Northwest and have been active in showing my watercolor and mixed paintings in the region.

Lynn Kopelke
Lynn Kopelke is a self-teaching artist who makes his home just outside Enumclaw, Washington. Primarily a western and landscape painter, he draws inspiration from his surroundings, his cowboy and cowgirl friends, and the mythos he grew up watching on TV, or, as he likes to say, Images of the real and reel west.
Though he cannot remember ever not drawing and painting he only decided to devote his efforts to painting full time after losing his long time “real” job over a decade ago.
He, mostly, works in acrylics though he has been known to dabble in watercolors, graphite, and ink. He has a background in illustration and portraiture, as well.
As his best friend once pointed out, “Lynn, you paint horses.” Yes. Yes, he does.
*He prefers this term “self teaching” to “self-taught.” You see, the word “taught” would seem to imply he has, actually, learned something.
